District Court: Charges Held for Man Accused in Leetsdale Church Theft

A  Beaver Falls man whom police said took more than $2,000 from a  church but failed to deliver any work also failed to appear for a hearing.

Curtis L. McCoy, 45, is charged with a single count of theft. Although he failed to appear for court Tuesday, McCoy's hearing took place without him and his charge was held for court. A hearing is now scheduled for Dec. 21 in Allegheny Common Pleas Court.

According to Leetsdale Police, McCoy was contracted in August 2009 to perform work at , 20 Beaver St. Police said McCoy was hired to build a handicapped-access ramp for the church and provided an estimate that the project would cost $4,800 to complete.

Police said McCoy requested half the payment before he was to start performing the work. The other half was to be paid after the job was complete, police said.

Although the church issued a $2,400 check to him, police said McCoy never started the job and church officials later could not get in touch with him.

On Sept. 20, a church member reported the matter to police. Police said McCoy hadn’t started the work by then and had not returned any of the church’s calls over the past two years.

 

The following people were charged and scheduled for preliminary hearings Nov. 1 at  office in Leetsdale:

  • Victoria Reagan, 39, of Chadwick Street, Sewickley, charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under suspension and reckless driving. reported that Reagan was stopped Aug. 6 on Route 65 at Cross Street as part of a West Hills DUI Task Force operation. Police reported a blood-alcohol level of 0.161 percent, above the state limit for drunken-driving.
  • Charles Ligons, 30, of Dickson Road, Sewickley, charged with 10 counts of possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence. said they were leaving a call July 1 in the 900 block of Dickson Road when officers saw Ligions riding a bicycle on the road. An Edgeworth officer stopped his vehicle and attempted to tell Ligons not to ride on the road. Before the officer could say anything, police said Ligons made a sharp turn and ran his bike into the front of the police car. Police said Ligons fell to the ground and began yelling that he was injured. An ambulance transported Ligons to hospital. During the ride, police said a paramedic reached into Ligons' pocket to find identification and found a small plastic bag containing 10 Xanax pills.
  • William Cheddar, 22, of North Avenue, Sewickley, charged with driving under the influence. reported officers were called to the parking lot Aug. 18 for a report of a possible drunk driver. Police said other officers watched as Cheddar squealed his tires as the car abruptly pulled into a parking space at the back of the restaurant. Cheddar was given a blood-alcohol test and transported to his sister’s house in .
