Police Blotter: Thefts, Chickens and a Suspicious Person

Theft reports

Sewickley Police are investigating a report of several thefts overnight Aug. 2 at the Sewickley Valley YMCA.  Police said the YMCA experienced thefts in June, July and August. On June 9 an iPod was stolen from a cabinet in the Wellness Center; on July 26, someone stole a Wii video game from an office; on July 30 Teen Center staff discovered an Xbox 360 had been stolen; and on July 30 a laptop was stolen off someone's desk. Police said the thefts seem to be occurring overnight. 

Police were called July 24 to the Sewickley Sporting Goods store for a theft report. Police said $150 was missing from the cash register. Surveillance video showed an employee shutting the camera off several times during her shift. The employee was the only person in the store.  

Injury report

Police were called Aug. 2 to War Memorial Park for a 7-year-old who fell and hit his head near the creek. When police arrived, YMCA camp staff were treating the boy for a small cut to the back of his head. Valley Ambulance also responded.

Suspicious person report

Police were called July 27 to the Sewickley Bridge area for a report of a man wearing nothing but a hospital gown. The anonymous caller was concerned and wanted someone to do a welfare check on the man. Police said the 35-year-old Coraopolis man told officers he was at the hospital and was leaving, but the hospital lost his clothes, police said. He was planning to walk to a friend’s house, but police gave him a courtesy ride home.

Vehicle damaged

Police responded July 26 to the 400 block of Thorn Street after a tree crashed onto a Chevy Cobalt and smashed out the back window. Police provided traffic control while Cochran Hose Fire Co. removed the tree.

Road rage reports

Police were dispatched recently to two road rage incidents. On July 25, police were called to the area of the Sewickley Bridge for a report of a road rage incident where a female driver reported a male driver was following her too closely. When police arrived, both vehicles were gone.

Police also went July 24 to southbound Route 65, but were called off because the parties were on Interstate 79. The incident was transferred to state police.

Chickens on the loose

Police were dispatched recently to the 800 block of Nevin Avenue for a report of chickens on the loose in a yard. An officer made several attempts to herd the chickens and all were unsuccessful. The chickens ended up running into the woods and the officer was unable to find them.

Bat call

Police were called Aug. 1 for a report of a bat in a Grimes Street house. The bat was caught and released. 

Lost dog

Police were called Aug. 3 to the 100 block of Walnut Street for a stray beagle roaming the street. The dog had no tags and was wearing a Pittsburgh Penguins collar. The beagle was taken to Oak Hill Kennels where it will be housed until the owner comes forward.
