Sewickley Crash Victim in Critical Condition

Homicide detectives say a 17-year-old driver may face charges.

A Carnegie man who suffered traumatic injuries Tuesday following a three-car accident on the Bridge is now fighting for his life in a Pittsburgh hospital.

Allegheny County homicide detectives said Gary Kaer, 56, of Carnegie, remains hospitalized at Allegheny General Hospital.

Kaer was taken to Heritage Valley and later transferred to AGH due to the extent of the injuries.

He said the 17-year-old driver who triggered the rush-hour crash may face charges, depending upon the outcome of an investigation.

“We’re still reviewing things,” Scherer said. “He may just be cited with vehicle violations.”

Police are not releasing the driver’s name because of his age.

Scherer said the crash happened about 4:30 p.m. on the Sewickley Bridge as the teen’s car headed toward Sewickley.

Scherer said the teen fell asleep at the wheel of his car. His Mazda crossed the double-yellow lines into the opposite lanes, colliding with a Toyota pickup and then Kaer's Dodge Caravan, before stopping on a jersey barrier.

“He made a mistake," Scherer said. "He’s been very cooperative with police."

Scherer did not know the name of the other driver, but said Kaer was the only person who suffered injuries.
