Sewickley Police Cite Driver With Route 65 Construction Zone Violations

Sewickley police cited a Pittsburgh man Saturday after police said his car sped past a flag woman on Route 65 in the area of the Sewickley Bridge construction.

Joshua Andrews, 19 of Pittsburgh, was cited with failing to obey a person directing traffic and reckless driving. 

Police said the flagger signaled for Andrews to stop his vehicle, but he continued southbound on Route 65 and almost struck her as he flew past. Police located his vehicle in Edgeworth on Shields Avenue and Beaver Street.

Fines were doubled due to the offenses being committed in an active construction zone.

Sewickley Police also responded to the following incidents. Each incident reflects police records and is not an indication of guilt.

Bat reports

On Sunday, police received a complaint at 1:30 p.m. about a possible rabid bat on a tree near a home on Backbone Road. The resident told police the bat lifted its wing and hissed at him as he approached. Police said the resident struck the bat with a large rock and placed the rock on top of the bat. He planned to notify the Allegheny County Health Department with concerns.

Police received another complaint Saturday about a bat at a home in the 300 block of McCready Way. Upon arrival, police learned a neighbor had taken the animal to War Memorial Park. 

Welfare check

Police were called Monday to the intersection of Blackburn Road and Beaver Street for a report of a man laying in the road. Police checked the area with negative results. 

Fire alarm

Police responded to a fire alarm shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Centennial Avenue and saw people leaving the building. Cochran Hose firefighters determined the incident was caused by burnt food on the stove and the area was ventilated, police said.

Suspicious person

Police responded Friday to a suspicious person call after a resident in the 800 block of McDonald Street complained someone knocked and tried to open the front door. The person was last seen walking with another woman carrying a Bible, police said. Officers located the women, who were with a group of six people, on Dippold Street and learned they were Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Vehicle damage

Police were called Thursday to the 800 block of Nevin Avenue for a damaged vehicle report. Police said someone keyed a 2012 Ford Escape with multiple deep gouges while it was parked next to Tony R’s Pizza. Police said the vehicle owner reported a damage estimate of $4,300.

Flat tire

Police received a report Thursday from a tractor-trailer driver in reference to the driver striking a construction cone on Route 65 and getting a flat tire due to a slice in a side well. The driver wanted the the incident on record.

Suspicious bag

Police were dispatched Sept. 19 to the intersection of Beaver Street at the bus stop for a suspicious bag. The green camouflage backpack had books and clothes inside along with a student’s name. Police contacted the district to advise the bag would be at the police station.

Loud party report 

Police were called at 3:30 a.m. Sept. 16 to the 800 block of Nevin Avenue for a loud party. Police said the area was checked, but with negative results.
