Sewickley Patrolman Commended for Stopping Man from Jumping Off Bridge

The recent actions of the patrolman and the borough fire chief have received special commendations.

Sewickley Police Patrolman Bill Hanlon is being recognized for his quick action that recently saved a man's life on the Sewickley Bridge.

Officers had gathered on the Moon Township end of the bridge March 29, where authorities were attempting to talk a mixed martial arts fighter out of jumping.

At one point, the man made a movement as if he was going to jump over the side. Hanlon went over a jersey barrier and grabbed the man before he could go, according to borough officials.

"This is just a good example of the fine job he does everyday," Sewickley Police Chief James Ersher said of Hanlon, an officer with the department for 12 years.

Sewickley Mayor Brian Jeffe recently announced commendations would be awarded to Hanlon as well as Cochran Hose Fire Chief Jeff Neff, both of whom went above and beyond their duties recently, he said.

Last Wednesday, Neff helped coordinate area police and fire departments, and a landing zone and medical flight from Heritage Valley Sewickley hospital during an emergency involving a 2-year-old patient from Moon Township.

The director of Valley Ambulance Authority wrote a letter to borough officials thanking Neff for the coordination he called "extremely tremendous."
