Shooting Victim Worked at Western Psych

Five people injured in the attack treated at UPMC Presbyterian; two others treated and released.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported this morning that one man who died in a mass shooting at Western Psych Thursday is from Edgewood.

"Michael Schaab, 25, of , was pronounced dead at the clinic at 3 p.m., about 80 minutes after the shootings occurred," the report states.

According to local obituaries, Schaab's sister, Nancy, died in October 2010 at the age of 26. Their parents are listed as Harry and Mary Schaab of Greensburg. The couple owns the Old Route 66 Grille in Greensburg.

Mary Schaab spoke with the Associated Press and said their daughter was tragically killed in a domestic dispute.

While watching news coverage of the shooting on Thursday, the family assumed Michael was safe because he worked on an upper floor in the geriatric unit, the AP reports.

Seven people are expected to survive injuries they sustained when of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of UPMC today. 

According to a UPMC press release, five patients, including two who have undergone surgery, are being treated at UPMC Presbyterian, and two have been treated and released. One had an injury not related to a gunshot wound. Police officials have not yet released the names of the injured, who included UPMC employees and a hospital visitor.

“I expect all of these patients to survive and do well,” said Dr. Donald Yealy, chair of emergency medicine at UPMC. “As the busiest trauma center in the region, we prepare for this kind of multi-casualty situation.”

Earlier on Thursday, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl confirmed two people were killed and said one of the deceased men was the shooter. Pittsburgh police believe one gunman entered the building with two firearms, he said.

The ages, genders and conditions of the patients treated at UPMC Presbyterian are as follows:

  • 46-year-old male, gunshot wound, fair condition.
  • 64-year-old female, gunshot wound, serious condition.
  • 54-year-old female, gunshot wound, good condition.
  • 35-year-old male, gunshot wound, fair condition.
  • 49-year-old male, gunshot wound, serious condition.

Care of patients was not compromised as events unfolded, said Claudia Roth, president and chief executive officer of WPIC. Additional staffing has been arranged, and many staff members volunteered to work extra shifts. All security procedures will be reviewed in the coming days.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is of utmost importance,” Roth said.

Jeffrey Romoff, president and chief executive officer of UPMC, praised the "work, professionalism and prompt response" of first responders.

"[We are] deeply, deeply saddened by today's events," he said. "I want to express our deepest sympathies to the victims."
