Anniversary Service Remembers 'The Day America Was Attacked'

Local military, fire and police mark the 10th anniversary in Leetsdale.

Rain wasn’t enough to dampen a show of patriotism Sunday night in where dozens of area local military, fire and police personnel came together to commemorate the of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Peter Poninsky, in leading the service, said the evening was put together to recognize , police, firefighters and EMS workers in the area, as well as  “to honor those who can no longer be with us.”

A parade that also included members of the local color guard, honor guard and bag pipers, marched in a procession from the borough building to Henle Park where the special memorial service took place before the Honor Roll on Ferry Street.

Poninsky announced the head of Germany’s Homeland Security was in attendance. Bells were toned to honor firefighters who have passed, while Allegheny 911 Dispatch conducted a special roll call to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice 10 years ago. Fifty names of local fire, police and members were also read in memory of those who have passed since 9/11.

Speakers included Pastor Thomas Moog of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sewickley, James Santucci and Ernie Logan, who recapped some of the events that occurred starting with the attacks.

Santucci said the day will “forever be remembered as the day America was attacked.”

Moments of silence, wreath presentations, the playing of TAPS and a 21-gun salute also helped mark the anniversary servic.
