Bell Acres Pays Tribute to 9/11 at Annual Community Day Celebration

The yearly picnic also includes special awards, door prizes and a smorgasbord.

marked its 18th annual on Saturday with a special ceremony and moment of silence commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Philip Ewanko, picnic committee chairman, said in light of the approaching 10-year anniversary, committee members felt the picnic was a fitting time to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The borough’s first picnic in 1994 took place on what later became an infamous day.

In addition to recognizing those who risk sacrificing their lives on a daily basis, committee members also awarded two borough residents with the Hank Larue Community Spirit Award. Sue Anderson and Marianne LaGoullon, both members of the ladies auxiliary, were recognized for going above and beyond their duties to deliver fliers they purchased and for raising $4,000 in funds.

The award is named for the former councilman, who died in 2002.
