Bridge Slated for Repairs in Leetsdale

A PennDOT inspection found the Leet Street Bridge in need of repairs.

The Leet Street Bridge is slated to undergo some structural repairs, according to Leetsdale officials.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation inspected the old truss bridge that carries traffic over Route 65 and Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and connects Beaver and Washington streets in Leetsdale.

Leetsdale Council President Joe McGurk said the borough was notified that the more than 100-year-old span would need repairs.

Norfolk Southern has offered to pay for the necessary repairs to the bridge, McGurk said.

McGurk said Leetsdale does not have ownership of the more than 100-year-old bridge, though in 1994 the railroad wanted to hand over the responsibility to the borough.

“We never accepted that,” McGurk said.

He said Norfolk Southern and PennDOT share responsibility for the bridge and deck while Leetsdale public works maintains the sidewalks and bridge during winter.

Built in the mid-1800s, the bridge was relocated to Leetsdale in the early 1900s from another county, McGurk said. The 10-ton weight limit was reduced to 3 tons as the condition of the bridge deteriorated over the years.

if it is a 3 ton weight limit why does that tow truck driver from the other side keep taking his overweight trucks over that bridge? Guess the rules don't apply to everyone.......
