Beaver County History Celebration

17 Beaver County sites have joined together to celebrate the history of the county on May 5th and 6th.  

The theme for this year’s weekend is the Civil War and Underground Railroad.

Many of the sites are changing their venue this year.  The following sites will focus on something Civil War related:

Beaver Area Heritage  Display of Civil War artifacts related to the Beaver Area will be shown.

Beaver County Industrial Museum Exhibit of Fry Glass and Henry Fry’s involvement in the Civil War will be on display.

Beaver County Model Railroad will showcase the role that our railroads had during the Civil War.

Beaver Falls Historical Society and Museum will have a young boy’s uniform, cavalry sword, flintlock, spyglass, garrote, cap,  flags and pictures of General Joseph McCabe on display. 

Ellwood City Area Historical Society Museum will have on display letters from soldiers to local family members and a few artifacts. 

Enon Valley Community Historical Society will focus on the veterans that served during the Civil War as well as some of the stops that were on the Underground Railroad in Enon. 

Greersburg Academy Complex will have displays on the Underground Railroad trail in Beaver County.  A small room has been dedicated to furniture and accessories from Arthur Bradford’s study. Information will be provided on the Greersburg  Anti-slavery Resolution of 1836.

Merrick Art Gallery  exhibit will introduce you to the anti-slavery owners of the New Brighton homes along with stories of celebrated abolitionists.

Monaca Community Hall of Fame will exhibit and share the history of the Phillipsburg Children’s Orphan School.  This school was established for the education of the children of deceased Civil War soldiers.

Old Economy Village The exhibit, housed in the Feast Hall, will highlight what the Harmonist would have experienced during the Civil War.

Richmond Little Red School House  has been researching the history of the homesteads that existed in Brighton Township during the Civil War.  This research has turned up an individual who aided escaped slaves.

Southside Historical will share their local link to the Underground Railroad trail, as well as information about the Naval Vessels of the Civil War.  The blacksmith will be making shackles.

A DVD will be shown highlighting the UGRR at the auditorium in the upper level at Community College of Beaver County at 8:30, also on Saturday morning.
