Recyclables will be picked up in the borough every other Thursday, starting this week.

is going green just in time for Earth Day.

Starting Thursday, the borough will begin collecting recyclables curbside from residents every other week. The materials will be delivered to Green Star Recycling of Neville Island, making an environmental and financial impact, according to borough officials.

Council President Joseph McGurk said the borough could save $15,000 annually, or $270 a week, if residents participate in the program.

“And I believe they will,” he said.

McGurk said the borough will receive $27.92 per ton of recyclables. The borough will also save $58 for each ton of garbage that doesn’t go to the landfill. Currently the borough puts out about 10 tons of garbage each Tuesday, but he said recycling should help lighten the load.

The borough’s trash bill should be reduced by 50 percent.

“If we’re successful in our program, getting the word out,” McGurk said.

Materials that can be recycled include cans, bottles, aluminum, paper and more. For a complete list, visit the borough's website here.

Residents can put the items in clear plastic bags. The borough has also applied for a grant to provide residents recycling bins, but in the meantime, bins are available at hardware stores.
