Legislators Recognize Leetsdale as Banner Community

Banner communities must meet certain criteria, including a demonstrated commitment to training and educating their officials and communicating with residents.

State Sen. Matt Smith recently presented Leetsdale Mayor Poninsky and members of Borough Council with a state Senate Citation recognizing them as a 2013 Banner Community.

The recognition took place at Thursday's council meeting.

State Rep. Rob Matzie also sponsored a resolution in the state House. Due to an unexpected family matter, a staff member from Matzie's office presented the citation on his behalf.

In April, the Allegheny League of Municipalities designated 21 municipalities, including Leetsdale and Sewickley, as Banner Communities.

Municipalities who earn the designation must meet certain criteria, such as implementing best practices in all aspects of their operations and governing in an inclusive, collaborative manner.

Banner communities have demonstrated a commitment to training and education of their officials, active participation in professional organizations, sponsorship of community events, and routine communication with residents.

Other communities that received honor include Moon, Ohio Township, Cranberry, North Fayette, Ross Township and Upper St. Clair.
