Low Voter Turnout Today in the State Primary Election

Voters in today continued to stream in and out of . But the turnout as of early afternoon wasn’t exactly high for the statewide Republican presidential primary.

“It’s kind of slow,” said Helene Zacharias, judge of elections in Ward II.

Polls close at 8 p.m. and polling locations are included at the end of this article. On the presidential ballot are Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.

Over in , poll workers at the municipal building said voter turn out was also slow moving.

In fact, Lyvonne Wesche, judge of election, said that she's never seen such low numbers for an election. As of 1 p.m., only 60 voters had come through, she said. 

"It's very slow," Wesche said. "I've been working polls a long time and I've never seen it this slow."

Typically, she said a small line forms at the door before polls open at 7 a.m. This year, she said it wasn't until 7:15 a.m. that the first voter stopped in.

"Leetsdale always has a higher than average [turnout], but this is the slowest we've ever seen," she said. 

, a local candidate for state representative, who stopped by Leetsdale's polling place this afternoon, agreed that turnout today has been low.

"It's going good. The polls are slow of course, but we're enjoying it," Angus said.
