Sewickley Hills Adopts Marcellus Shale Ordinance, Discusses Funding for Sewage System Repairs

Council votes unanimously to adopt the Boundary Tolerance Ordinance at Monday night's general council meeting, while it plans to ask for funding from residents for the borough's sewage system.

During a public hearing Monday night, Council adopted a Boundary Tolerance Ordinance as part of the borough's overall zoning ordinance.

This ordinance allows for an expansion of privately owned property that is divided by a district boundary line of up to 95 feet.

Despite the board's unanimous adoption of this ordinance, Sewickley Hills resident Ray Ott said he still believes that some property owners have lost opportunities for drilling.

The board also devoted much of the meeting Monday to discussing a letter that soon will be sent out to 73 homes in the borough, requesting for sewer system repairs and updates.

Council members said they fear more headaches and costs will arise if they wait any longer to correct the problem. They have decided to begin the project immediately and ask residents to pay $500 by the end of January. It's not clear what happens next if residents balk at paying that cost.

Another issue brought up at the meeting pertains to the Woods of Sewickley Hills development site. Sediment-ladened stormwater is leaking onto Red Mud Hollow Road and ending up on Kilbuck Run.  The Allegheny County Conservation District is working with a developer to find a solution for this problem.

Council also discussed the 2012 budget, which will be approved at a meeting in December.
