Sewickley Council Appoints New Board Member

Robert "Mike" Glenn will fill the seat of Dean S.C. Williams, who died last month.

Sewickley Council appointed a new councilman Monday night to fill the seat left vacant last month by the death of  Dean S.C. .

Councilwoman Carole Ford was first to nominate Robert “Mike” Glenn, the only candidate that the board nominated at its meeting.

Council then voted unanimously to appoint Glenn, with Councilman Stan Ference voting over the telephone.

Glenn was not present, but two of the four candidates who applied for the position were in the audience.

Councilman Robert Hague thanked the applicants, describing all those who applied  as “extremely qualified.” Hague said there have been times that an open seat didn’t receive any applications and encouraged those who weren't picked to stay involved.

“We’ll be in touch with you to be a part of what we’re doing going forward,” Hague said.

Councilman William Cornman also encouraged the others to run for office. Three seats will be open in Ward 2 on Jan. 1.

Glenn's temporary term expires Dec. 31. Because Williams was re-elected last year to a term that expires in 2013, voters will choose a candidate to serve out the remaining two years of Williams' term. Anyone from Ward 2 may file a petition to appear on the ballot.

Council began interviews last week with three candidates. The last applicant was interviewed on Monday, prior to the regular meeting.

Mayor Brian Jeffe will administer to Glenn the oath of office at next month's council meeting.
