Sewickley Council Awards Contracts for Paving, Pump Station Projects

Council voted Monday night to approve a combined total of more than $1 million in contracts for various projects. 

Council awarded $553,363 in contracts for the Boundary Street Pump Station project. J.R. Contracting of Eighty Four was awarded a $369,000 contract for mechanical work and Wagner Electric of Pittsburgh was awarded the $184,363 electrical contract.

Borough Manager Kevin Flannery said this is the last pump station to be replaced. The pump station located by the  is part of the borough's main system.

Council also awarded a $456,302 contract to T.A. Robinson Asphalt Paving, Inc. of Bridgeville, to perform paving work as part of the borough’s 2012 road project. Officials said the bid was well within the borough's budget.

Roadwork includes Beaver Street from Blackburn Road to Straight Street and Nevin Avenue from Hopkins Street to Crescent Avenue.

Flannery said he envisions the paving company will begin working around June 15 or 16, but a firmer schedule will be discussed with the company and provided at next month’s meeting. 

Councilman Stan Ference expressed concern that the project have minimal interruptions to the business district.

Flannery said the work only involves milling and paving unlike , which also involved utility and pipe work.

Paving on Beaver Street is also expected to take place on weekends and some nights. Flannery said work won't begin in the business district until after the Fourth of July holiday, which he said is typically a down period.  

In other business, council:

• Passed a resolution establishing a three-way stop at the intersection of Chadwick Street and Ferry Street. 

• Authorized the sale of the Pierce 1993 Fire Truck with a minimum bid of $60,000. Bids will be opened June 14.

• Approved plans to apply for $50,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to assist with the cost of demolishing four dilapidated and abandoned houses in the borough.
