Sewickley Heights Approves Guide Rail Project, Roof Replacement

Work should begin sometime between late summer and early fall.

Sewickley Heights Council recently approved a $4,619 contract with Ward Building and Highway Specialties of McKeesport to replace 660 feet of the old post and cable guide rail.

The borough budgeted $8,000 for new guide rail on Pony Hollow and Ward was the lowest of four bids opened during Monday's meeting.

Sewickley Heights Manager William Rohe said the old material will be replaced with the same guide rail typically seen along highways today.

Over the past two years, the borough has worked to replace guiderail on the north end of Backbone Road from Little Sewickley Creek Road to the Bell Acres borough line. Rohe said Ward did the prior work for the borough as well.

“They did a good job,” he told council. 

The Pony Hollow Road project could begin sometime in late summer or early fall.

Council also approved a $15,625 contract with Zeke and Sons Roofing and Siding Specialists of Coraopolis to replace the roof on the maintenance building. Built in 1987, Rohe said the borough is being proactive in replacing the more than 20-year-old roof before leaking and other problems start.

“We just want to play it safe rather than sorry,” Rohe said.

The four-bay garage houses all of the borough’s road department equipment, including a grader, backhoe and salt spreader trucks.

  • The NFL Alumni chapter recently held its annual golf outing at the The event took place on Monday.
  • Merriman Road is being resurfaced by county maintenance crews in Sewickley Heights and Aleppo Township; however, it is not closed. Work is being performed with lane closures only.
  • The next regular council meeting takes place at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20.
