Sewickley Water Authority to Begin Hydrant Flushing

Flushing in the Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Glen Osborne service areas begins on Sunday, Sept. 22.

The Sewickley Water Authority will begin the fall season portion of its semi-annual hydrant flushing program starting on Sunday evening, Sept. 22.

During flushing in the Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Glen Osborne service areas start Sunday, customers may notice low pressure and water discoloration.

Customers should test the water before doing laundry or drawing large quantities for use.

Brian J. Hohman, manager, said the SWA program flushing is completed each year, once the spring, or early April, and once in the fall, or late September, to ensure that sediment build up in the water pipes is remove.

Both state and local regulatory agencies require this program twice per year.

Water pipe flushing is the process of cleaning the interior of the water distribution pipes by sending a rapid flow of water through the pipes, and helps maintain water quality, he said.
