The Iraq War, 10 Years of Casualties: The Sewickley Valley Feels Its Touch

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week—on March 19, 2003—and although it is officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

CNN has assembled a map identifying all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 196 Pennsylvanians.

Among those casualties: a young Marine from nearby Emsworth. From the CNN war casualties website:

• Lance Cpl. Patrick Brian Kenny, 20, was killed Oct. 6, 2005. He served in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Kenny died when a homemade bomb detonated during combat near Karmah, Anbar province. He was the captain of the football team at Avonworth High School but skipped his graduation in 2003 to report to boot camp, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. A memorial 5K run/walk is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1 through Ben Avon and Emsworth.
