Three Enter Republican Race to Succeed Pippy

D. Raja, Sue Means and Mark Mustio competing in April 24 primary for nomination.

Three Republican candidates will vie for Pennsylvania seat in the state's 37th Senatorial District. 

Pippy, who has served in the state Senate since 2003, announced in January that he would from the Legislature at the end of his term in 2013. 

Candidates D. Raja, a Mt. Lebanon business owner who in November lost his bid to become Allegheny County executive, Bethel Park resident Sue Means, and state , R-Moon, have filed to succeed Pippy.

The Republican Committee of Mt. Lebanon has endorsed Raja, a former Mt. Lebanon commissioner. 

Means, an educator and longtime activist in support of limited government, told Peters Patch that she planned to serve only two terms in the Legislature and would reject a public pension for her service.

Pippy earlier this week Mustio for the Senate seat. Mustio, a Moon resident, has also picked up an endorsement from Allegheny County Councilman Vice Gastgeb, who dropped out of the race for Pippy's seat in January.

Mustio also is seeking re-election for his seat in the state House's 44th District. No other Republicans have filed. Ron Steele, a member, has dropped out of the race. 

The Allegheny County Democratic Committee has endorsed Democrat Mark Scappe to replace Mustio in the state House. No other Democrats have entered the race.
