Kelly Defeats Eaton, Porter for 3rd Congressional District

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Butler, easily defeated Democratic contender Missa Eaton and an unaffiliated Independent candidate, for Pennsylvania’s Third Congressional District Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

In a statement, Kelly, who owns a family-run car dealship in Butler, thanked his supporters. The former Butler County council member was first elected to Congress in 2010.

"Two years ago the good people of Pennsylvania's 3rd District elected me to represent their interests of restoring a strong economy and bringing fiscal sanity back to Washington," he said.

"The goals of two years ago remain the same today in the new 3rd District and across this country. I am humbled by their support and pledge to continue fighting everyday to bring western Pennsylvania's voices, values and issues to Washington."

Tuesday's election was the first to use new redistricting maps based on 2010 Census data.

Prior to redistricting, Cranberry was part of the 4th Congressional District led by Jason Altmire. Fellow Democratic incumbent Rep. Mark Critz defeated Altmire in the primary election after the 4th district was folded into one new 12th district.

Critz, who Altmire later endorsed, was defeated Tuesday by Republican Keith Rothfus of Edgeworth.

On her Twitter page, Eaton, an assistant professor of psychology at Penn State Shenango and an active Democrat in Mercer County, called a Tuesday's election "a hard fought campaign." She also thanked her volunteers, staff, friends and family for their support.

"Congratulations to Senator Bob Casey, Representative Mark Longietti, and all the other Democrats elected in Pennsylvania," she later tweeted.

Someone tried to run against him. I believe he only needed 300 votes in the primary, but no one went out to vote for him (except me). We cannot wait untit the zero hour next time to field a candidate.

I don't think people know how bad he is! I was involved with a women's organization for 23 years and several years ago I had met with him regarding an issue involving the police being allowed to confiscate guns and weapons from the home of a batterer (he was against it). His response was that "women are liars ... too many woman make up stories about their husbands just so they can keep the house and other stuff." Is that really the politician we want representing us? I participated in a march at Harrisburg at the time over the issue and the women's groups had pins made up saying "women are dying, not lying". And, here he is still in office!

A summary at the Cranberry Township West 6 polling place lists 91 people who wrote in for the Metcalfe race. A sampling of the write in's included 14 "anyone but Metcalfe", 2 for Atticus Finch (character from "To Kill a Mockingbird"), and various township officials among others. The most write-ins for any other race at the polling place was 3. Hopefully this is an uncurrent for change!
