Patch Poll: What Do You Think of Proposed Ban on Texting While Driving?

The state House of Representatives passes a bill to make texting while driving a primary offense.

Ever answer a text while you’re stopped in the car at a red light? Or worse, type out a reply while you’re driving?

In the near future, that may be a finable offense.

In a 188-7 vote, the state House of Representatives on Monday overwhelmingly approved SB314, which would ban texting while driving for people of all ages.

The bill also makes texting while driving a primary offense, meaning police are permitted to pull over motorists for violations.

The bill now is making its way back to the Senate, which originally passed a version of the bill that made it a lesser offense. Senators must reconcile that bill with the one changed and passed by the House.
