Off to College!

College packing and organizing.

Q:  We are sending our oldest off to college this year.   What advice can you share regarding packing and organizing?

A:   There are many packing checklists available online, the link below is my favorite. You check off the items you want to pack and then print off your own customized list.  You will also find some helpful insider tips.

There is no room for disorganization in small spaces.  Here are a few more ideas that will help keep the clutter under control in your dorm room:

-Use over- the- door hooks and storage holders (photos) on the inside of closet doors and on the back of doors.

-Pack some Command hooks ( 3M)  and sticky tack ( available at craft stores) to hang a variety of necessities without damaging any walls.

-Bed risers are an easy way to get some extra storage space under your bed.

-A plastic tote caddy is ideal for carrying all of your toiletries to the shower.  You may want to get another caddy to hold cleaning supplies for your room.

-If you are coming home for Thanksgiving- consider that when you are packing in August. After the holiday, you can bring back your winter clothes and jackets.

-Underbed storage boxes can hold items that don't fit anywhere else in your room.

-Bring a file box to collect important papers and memorabilia.

-A desktop organizer can hold all of your academic essentials in one place.

-If your school does not provide a daily planner, I encourage you to get one.  Use it for assignments and all appointments including time for yourself.  For example, schedule a workout or yoga class in your planner. Utilizing a daily planner (digital or hard copy) helps manage your time and exercises a necessary life skill.
