Tackle Your "To-Do" List!

Q: I start my day off with a "To-Do" List, but never seem to get my work done.  I get distracted with other things and by the end of the day I'm disappointed with what I DIDN'T accomplish.  Any suggestions on how I can stay on task?

A: Assuming there is no over-scheduling involved, I  commend you for planning out your day on paper.   Distractions and interruptions are a primary cause for veering off course even when a written plan is in place.  If this happens to you...remember this:  While you may be doing something, it's not something that's on your list for today.
I recommend cutting out all distractions to help keep your focus on the task at hand. For example, close your office door, turn off sound notifications on your phone and computer for incoming emails, and all social media sites.  All of those incoming items can wait a few hours to be addressed.
Another suggestion is to use a timer to hold you accountable while you work on your list.  Set the timer for 30 minutes.  Work on one item from your "To-Do" list exclusively for 30 minutes, without the distractions mentioned above.  You will be amazed at how much you will get accomplished.  Take a 5-minute break and reset your timer again.  When making your " to do" list, build in time to check emails and return phone calls that may interrupt your day or schedule those items for tomorrow's list.
