Day of Service: Sewickley Academy Students 'Stand Up' for Homeless Children

Thursday's initiative was aimed at raising awareness for 1,700 public school children in Allegheny County identified as homeless last year.

's student, faculty and staff volunteers stood in silence for five minutes Thursday on the school’s turf field to support the Homeless Children’s Education Fund, a non-profit dedicated to helping homeless youth.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness for the 1,700 public school children and youth who were identified as experiencing homelessness last year in Allegheny County.

During this “Stand Up,” which is considered a performance art installation, Lower School volunteers stood in silence for five minutes holding a drawing of a child's face in front of their own to represent the children.

The action was part of a larger service day planned and executed by Sewickley Academy students. Students also volunteered in other places, including the "secret garden" across the roadway on Hazel Lane.
