In the seminar, Dr. Burns will describe three powerful models for treating anxiety disorders:

-The Cognitive Model, based on the idea that anxiety results from distorted negative thoughts that can be defeated with cognitive techniques.

-The Behavioral Model, based on the idea that anxiety results from avoidance, and that exposure is necessary for successful treatment.

-The Hidden Emotion Model, based on the idea that anxious individuals are nearly always exceptionally “nice” individuals who sweep their feelings under the carpet in order to please others.

Dr. Burns will illustrate how to integrate these models in the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorders, Phobias, Agoraphobia, Shyness, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Performance Anxiety, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Hypochondriasis.

Dr. Burns is Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and has serves as Visiting Scholar at Harvard Medical School and Acting Chief of Psychiatry at the Presbyterian/University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

Registration must be made at www.agh.cme.org, and the deadline is April 27, or until the conference is filled. Fee is $249, or $99 for students (first 50 to register.) Questions may be directed to tcochran@wpahs.org.

Dr. Burns’ appearance is part of the Ester Mandelker, Ph.D., Memorial Conference, instituted by the Allegheny General Hospital Department of Psychiatry in memory of her tireless pursuit of excellence as a psychologist, mentor and faculty member. At AGH, she was known for her extraordinary psychotherapy skills, and teaching and supervision capabilities. The conference is supported by a generous gift from the Mandelker family.
