The five artists will join students from 16 area high schools throughout Western Pennsylvania chosen to participate in the "Suburban Pittsburgh High School Student Exhibition" of ceramics at the Clay Place Gallery at Standard Ceramics in Carnegie. The gallery puts a spotlight on local and national artists, ranging from students to professionals.

Quaker Valley's student artists are Aura Escobar, Sarah Miller, Maria Ross, Emily Tusick and Haley Ashner.

The opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clay Place with live music and refreshments. The gallery is located at One Walnut St., Carnegie.

All of the works in the show are ceramic pieces either thrown on a pottery wheel or hand-built. First-, second- and third-place prizes of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded, along with the "Best of Show" award, a hand-made platter that is given to one of the schools.

Tom Turner, a ceramic artist for nearly 50 years, will serve as this year's judge.  His work is featured in more than 30 books published in five countries. His pieces are displayed in numerous museums, including the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.  Turner lives in Mars Hill, N.C. where he operates his studio and teaching facility.
