Lucky 13: Quaker Valley Holds Class of 2013 Graduation

Quaker Valley High School's 57th annual commencement took place on Monday, June 10 at Robert Morris University.

Superintendent Joseph Clapper said he compiles research on every graduating class, and that this class has focused on achieving great accomplishments, including being named one of the top high schools in the country.

"It's no secret that members of this class have helped us obtain this prestigious role," Clapper said.

In his remarks to the graduating seniors, High School Principal Andrew Surloff told the students to "be good."

"We want you to succeed and we wish you well, but we absolutely count on you to be good," Surloff said.

School Director David Pusateri, who gave the welcome address, said graduations are a celebratory event and that "the entire Quaker Valley community is proud of you."

"Before you move your tassels tonight from right to left, I want you to know your community looks at you with hope," Pusateri said.

Family and friends cheered as the 138 graduates crossed the stage and received their diplomas in the Sewall Center at RMU's Moon Township campus.

This year's honored teacher was Quaker Valley Middle School Teacher Jeremiah Sheffield.

Lea Giotto, honored student speaker, spoke about the No. 13, typically an unlucky number, she said, but one that she finds on this date to be lucky. She recalled the historical events of 9/11, the presidential election, the Sandy Hook tragedy, all experienced along the way with fellow classmates.

"We should all aspire to be the cause of celebration and the preventer of tragedy along the way," Lea said.

Kelsey Kirby, also an honored speaker, said she and fellow classmates have reached a new phase, with freshly opened eyes. She said the ability to be curious and ask the question "what if" is priceless.

"As graduates we are standing at the perfect crossroads," Kelsey said.
