New Technology Plan Approved at Quaker Valley

The plan is expected to decrease technology costs for the school district.

Quaker Valley School Board members approved a technology plan to purchase Dell laptops for high school students and Chromebooks for middle school students.

The four-year technology plan is a part of the district's one-to-one laptop initiative. The district's current technology plan expires at the end of the 2014 school year.

Elementary students will continue use of Apple computers. The school board approved the measure in an 8-to-1 vote Monday.

District spokeswoman Tina Vojtko said the 2013-2014 plan will cost an estimated $559,500. In the next three years the annual cost is expected to decrease to $331,000.

The current school year's cost is $592,000.

It would seem that both of these choices for our school district technology program are misguided. Dell is in deep financial trouble and will likely be unable to support the computer purchased or leased before the end of the district’s engagement.
The Google devices will soon be challenged in the education environment on the basis of student privacy. I would love to know who is making these choices with our tax dollars.
