Quaker Valley Seniors Lead Quakers into the WPIAL Final Four

Senior Nelson Westwood nets career high 20 in QV upset win.

Senior Nelson Westwood saved a great performance for last on Saturday and Quaker Valley boys basketball is headed to the WPIAL Final Four.

Westwood, who all season filled the role of QV’s top defender and assist leader, played the role of go-to scorer.

He poured in a career-high 20 points in addition to an overall great floor game to lead QV in the 62-61 upset victory.

“We knew we were going to get our chances, and luckily we took advantage when the opportunities arose,” Westwood said.

But #3 seed Seton La Salle did not go without a fight. Quaker Valley clung to a one point lead with 16 seconds on the clock on Saturday afternoon at North Hills High School, and Seton La Salle had possession of the ball.

SLS Junior Point guard Dale Clancy drove and dished to Senior Luke Brumbaugh, who attacked the hoop for a would-be winning basket. But Quaker Valley Senior Burke Moser challenged the shot, and forced Brumbaugh to shoot into the bottom of the rim. Shortly after, Moser gathered the ball in the corner and chucked it full court as the time expired.

Quaker Valley trailed 24-16 mid-way through the second quarter when a Quaker Valley run pulled the score back to 28-27 prior to QV’s final possession of the first half. Fittingly, QV’s final offensive set of the half ended with Westwood draining a long three-pointer to give Quaker Valley a 30-28 halftime lead.

Quaker Valley never looked back.  The team led the entire second half, and took a four-point lead into the final minute.  QV traded points with SLS, with Moser connecting on four straight foul shots to finish with 15 points.

Seton clawed to within one on a three pointer by Clancy and two missed free throws by Westwood, which set up the final possession.  But for the second time in a week, the Quaker Valley seniors decided that they weren’t ready for their careers to be over.

The Quakers will play next against #7 seed Burrell High School, who upset Greensburg Central Catholic.  The Quakers face Burrell High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at North Allegheny Senior High School.
