Sewickley Academy Senior to Receive Honor from Rotary Club of Pittsburgh

A Sewickley Academy senior dedicated to helping raise awareness and resources for Batey inhabitants in the Dominican Republic is being recognized this month by the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh.

Amanda Nocera will be honored Wednesday, Feb. 27 as the Student of Distinction for the month of February, according to Sewickley Academy.

Nocera, 18, was chosen because of on her outstanding leadership as a student and athlete and her commitment to service.

As a McAdams Global Fellowship scholar, Amanda had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic. As a result of that trip, she initiated , where  thousands of dispossessed Haitians toil under armed guards on sugar cane plantations.

She will travel to the Dominican again in May as part of her senior project to witness the birth certificates being distributed and to work in the sugar cane fields. 

Jeremiah Jackson, Sewickley Academy’s director of diversity, called Amanda a role model.

“Amanda consistently demonstrates a willingness to help others, and her actions are guided by her desire to better the community and world,” Jackson said. “She is a role model for all of us.”

Amanda will be recognized at noon Feb. 27, at the Omni William Penn Hotel, located at 530 William Penn Place in downtown Pittsburgh.
