Sewickley Public Library Looks to Improve Security
Increased security measures are being explore to prevent thefts in response to recent attempts.
The Sewickley Public Library is exploring additional security measures that go beyond tracking overdue books and unpaid fines, according to a representative on the library board.
Quaker Valley School Director Gianni Floro told the board last night that two attempted break-ins have prompted discussions about adding security systems, such as video monitoring.
In one case, Sewickley-area police responded to the library for an alarm and found that someone pried open a door. No one was found inside the building during the November incident and police said everything appeared to be in order except for a door with noticeable pry marks.

In addition to its inventory of books, DVDs and other materials, Floro said the library has some great artifacts to protect. He asked the local community to remain diligent as well.
“If anyone should see anyone lurking or something afoot at the library, please contact our local police and let them know about it,” Floro said.

Teacher Retires
A popular Quaker Valley school teacher is preparing to say good-bye.
The school board voted Tuesday night to accept the retirement resignation of Rita Hoepp, effective March 31.
Superintendent Joseph Clapper said Hoepp has worked in the district for nearly 25 years.
In addition to 11th grade English and honors English, Hoepp teaches journalism and is the advisor of the Quaker Quill, the high school newspaper.
She was recognized in 2005 with the Quaker Valley Award for Excellence, an award established in 2001 and presented annually to recognize a teacher with distinguished service to students.
School Director Kay Wijekumar said accepting Hoepp's retirement was with the “greatest of regrets.”
Closing ACE
School Director Mark Rodgers said Quaker Valley intends to find a substitute program for two sudents attending the Alternative Center for Education.
The joint board, made up of representatives from each member school district, voted on Jan. 8 to formally close the alternative school. ACE is located on the same campus, but is separate from the Parkway West Career and Technology Center.
Jack Highfield, director of Parkway West, has also retired effective Dec. 31. A search is now underway to fill the position. In the meantime, Assistant Director Darby Copeland is serving as acting director.
