St. James Students Race for Education

The annual race helps support programming needs at St. James.

 recently held its seventh Annual Race for Education sponsored by UPMC Passavant.

The theme, “Pittsburgh Pride,” gave students the chance to race with the Pittsburgh Pirates Pierogies—Jalapeño Hannah, Chester Cheese, Sauerkraut Saul and Oliver Onion—while wearing their black-and-gold race day T-shirts.

“We have the race every year so the kids have fun while building school spirit,” Sister Christy Hill, the school principal, said in a statement. “Additionally, this fundraiser supports the overall programming needs of St. James.”

Other sponsors to this year’s race include , The , Alain Lemieux, the Rooney family, Scott Turnbull of Allegheny Insulation Company and .

This year's goal was to raise $30,000 and so far, more than $25,000 in promised donations has been received. Family and friends of the students pledged money as well.

Race for Education is an annual jog-a-thon, which involves students
"of all ages" walking or jogging around a designated area for one hour. St. James' race took place Oct. 14.

Race for Education programs have been conducted in more than 1500 schools in 40 states since the company's inception in 1996.
