Key to Greatness:  This year, students in the seventh- and eighth-grade language arts classes at Quaker Valley Middle School are competing in a series of in-school writing competitions. The first round was Nov. 3 with a challenge requiring each student to write an informative essay.

The assignment: "Write an essay about an unforgettable teacher, relative or friend. Explain what qualities make this person unforgettable." 

Student responses listed classmates to kindergarten teachers. After the challenge, the language arts teachers for seventh and eighth grades scored the essays as a team, picking the top respondents from each class and the overall best essay writers from each grade level. 

For this first challenge, Maggie Dobbins and Beth Fleming were the top writers for the seventh grade. In the eighth grade, Dana Jensen and Taylor Thornhill took top honors.

Classroom-level winners will receive certificates for free ice cream cones from the . Grade-level winners are each awarded $10 iTunes gift cards.
