"They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace." Jer 6:14 Jeremiah is speaking of the priests, and their words to the people of Judah. The passage continues with other actions/words, much of what passes for pastoral care in contemporary churches. People are searching for peace, and when they are unable to find it, they look to escape mechanisms. In the Romans passage, Paul is very clear about how we obtain peace that is certain, and has a foundation upon the unchanging God. Peace with God is far, far more important than peace between people. Yes, Paul says in Romans 12, "... be at peace with one another...," but the peace that brings joy is the peace of Romans 5:1, "...peace with God." Trying to obtain peace horizontally, without first having peace vertically is a failed strategy. We should not be surprised when we are anxious, or when others are anxious when the peace with God is broken. Proclaiming the words, "Peace, peace ..." when there is no good reason only leads to disillusionment.

I agree with you Roger. How can mankind expect to have peace on earth, until mankind first has peace with God.
