Jeremiah's Place works to prevent child abuse and seeks to provide a relief nursery for children and families.

Later this month, teams and individuals will race to help provide a safe haven for children and families in the community.

The race takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at the North Park Boat House. Strollers are welcome.

"We are planning to make this an annual event. We feel that it will be great way to bring our community together for an important cause to spread the word about how we can prevent child abuse and neglect in Pittsburgh," said Lauren Lorenzi, who is organizing the race with the help of other Jeremiah's Place board members.

Named for a 2-month-old who needed crisis help, Jeremiah’s Place is a Pittsburgh-based non-profit center that works to prevent child abuse and provide a support system and relief nursery for young children and their families during times of crisis, according to the website.

Awards will follow the 5K Run/Walk and participants will receive a T-shirt and swag bag. Registration is $20 per person or $18 for groups of more than 10. All proceeds benefit Jeremiah's Place.

Children can register for free to participate in the 100-meter Children's Dash.

The race will be followed by a community day until 12:30 p.m. The fun includes potato sack races, face painting, games, music and more. Tables with other non-profit organizations and businesses who also work with children and families in the community will be present as well.
