Sewickley Fans Crushed By Super Bowl Loss

Black-and-gold fans express disappointment after the Steelers' loss to the Green Bay Packers, but still support their team.

With just minutes left in the game Sunday night, Brenden Greene kept his fingers crossed that the Black and Gold would pull off the win and take the Super Bowl victory home to Pittsburgh.

“Right now my nerves are just racing,” said Greene of , who watched the game at Lounge in Leetsdale and kept faith that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would be able to march the team past the Green Bay Packers’ defense and into the end zone.

“We’re just hoping he can bring out a victory,” Greene said.

The Steelers played well, but apparently not well enough, with plenty of turnovers and missed catches to go around.

“I am very disappointed,” said David Conover, who came from Pittsfield Township, Warren County, to watch the game with friends.

Steelers Nation refused to give up hope, even when the Steelers were down by 11 points at the half. The team came back in the second half, only to have the score fall again. With only a three-point deficit, most fans thought the Steelers would get down field  to at least kick a field goal and tie the game, if not score a touchdown.

“We just want it so bad. We just have to have it. That’s how we are in Pittsburgh,” Greene said.

“I’m very nervous, yeah, but we will pull through,” said Carri Unger of Sewickley, referring to the nail-biting fourth-quarter play action that was quickly coming to a close.

Unger said she believed the Steelers would step up and come through with a last-second win.

“It needs to come to the nerves of steel for the Steelers. We will pull through,” Unger said.

Fans couldn’t take their eyes off the television as the game wound to a close. After Roethlisberger’s last missed catch of the night, heads hung low. Some fans became emotional and expletives flew as the loss sunk in.

“This is horrible,” said Kristen Cheddar of Bell Acres, who was dressed in black and gold. “This is the worst ever.”

Tom Marroni, owner of Marroni’s Lounge, said he also thought the Steelers would pull off the win “down to the last play.”

“We were in it until the end,” Marroni said. “It was a good Super Bowl.”

One Steelers fan said he thought the Packers were a good team this year, and the better team Sunday night.

Though defeated, many fans said they’ll always cheer for and support their Steelers.

Marroni’s wife Joni added that the Steelers played a heck of a season this year.

“It was still a great year. We still had a great time,” she said.
