Women's Amateur Golf Championships at Allegheny Country Club

Sewickley native Carol Semple Thompson competed in the Pennsylvania State Women's Amateur Golf Championships held this week in Sewickley Heights.

The 76th Pennsylvania State Women’s Amateur Golf Championships are winding down at .

Local favorite , a native, competed this week as the No. 2 seed in the Senior Championship division. She won her first match on the 14th hole and received a medal Tuesday night for best qualifying score.

Thompson won a tough match Wednesday against Liz Haines from Philadelphia before Bonnie George defeated Thompson in the third round on Thursday. George is a two-time defending champion of the Super Seniors division for golfers 65 and up. This year, she moved back to the Senior division to compete.

"She's playing extremely well," said Amy Kennedy, spokeswoman. 

George and defending 2011 Senior Champion Connie Shorb compete today for the championship title. The weeklong golf  began Monday, Aug. 13.

Other notables include Wanda McGarry of Wexford (Senior First) and Courtney Myhrum (Senior Championship), who plays out of Fox Chapel.
