Get Out: Antique Roadshow, Family Movie Night or 'Dark Knight'

It's Thursday, and you’re still trying to figure out what to do for the weekend. Sewickley Patch is coming to the rescue. Check out these 10 ideas and tell us yours.

When/Where: 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at , Sewickley. Saturday times may vary.

Why Go: This exhibit, juried by Cynthia Shaffer, reveals the essence of the organic: plants, animals, water, earth, sky, fire. Runs through Saturday, July 28.

2. Sewickley Antique Roadshow

When/Where: 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the , Sewickley.

Why Go: Bring up to two items per person and Carol Foster, accredited senior appraiser, will evaluate your hand-carried antiques. Acceptable items include dolls, toys, glassware, paintings, vintage clothing and silver. Jewelry, stamps and coins are not included. 

Admission: $5 per item. Registration required as space is limited. Call 412-741-6920 or email sewickley@einetwork.net. Photos of items may be submitted before the event to allow preliminary research. Email photos or drop them off at the Reference Desk. 

 

3. 'A Bug's Life' Hike and Movie

When/Where: 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at , Sewickley Heights.

Why Go: Learn interesting bug facts, hike with one of the naturalists, and maybe even catch butterflies, lighting bugs and beetles. At dark, families can enjoy Disney’s A Bugs Life. Refreshments are welcome; only popcorn will be provided.

4. 'Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole'

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. (dusk) Friday, July 20 at Moon Park, Ewing Road. 

Why Go: The "" series, sponsored by , continues at the amphitheater with the PG-rated family feature film. 

Admission: Free.

When/Where: 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday at , Robinson.

Why Go: The Settlers Cabin Dive Pool will host the Preliminary Zone A Championships, one of four regional meets that serve as qualifiers for the U.S. National Diving Championships, which will take place in Greensboro, N.C. in August.

Admission:  $3 for ages 60 and older; $5 for ages 18 to 59; $4 for ages 13 to 17; $3 for ages 6 to 12; and $1 for ages 0 to 5. Spectators are also welcome to use the Settlers Cabin Wave Pool.

 

6. Dolphin Tales

When/Where: dusk Friday, July 20 at Blueberry Hill Park, Nicholson Road, Franklin Park.

Why Go: Movies in the Park is sponsored by the Franklin Park recreation department. Bring a lawn chair or beach blanket to the park's football fields and enjoy a PG-rated family-oriented movie. Refreshments will be sold

Admission: Free.

 

7. Family Fishing at Soggy Bottom Lake

When/Where: 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Fern Hollow.  

Why Go: Meet at the nature center then car pool to Soggy Bottom Lake, a private residence on Fern Hollow Road, to fish for Blue Gills, Bass, Carp, and Sunfish. Fern Hollow will provide all of the equipment necessary through a grant from the state Fish and Boat Commission. 

Admission: $15 per fisherman and $5 for an accompany adult. Fern Hollow members will receive a $5 discount for anyone signed up to fish and the accompany adult is admitted free. Pre-registration is required to participate. Call 412-741-6136 or email fhnc@verizon.net.

 

8. Sommore and Friends

When/Where: Doors open at 8 p.m. Show starts at 9 p.m. Friday at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland.

Why Go: Sommore is one of America's top female comics and reigns supreme as a "Queen of Comedy" entertainer.

9. Summer Bridal Show

When/Where: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Why Go: This show, presented by Wedding Clickers, features a couture runway show, bridal marketplace and special guest Monte Durham, from TLC's Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta. 

Admission: $10 cash or check only, payable at the Bridal Show entrance. Only brides and grooms need register, though all are welcome. Garage parking is $6 per vehicle and free parking is available in surface lots at Old Mellon/Civic Arena.

 

10. The Dark Knight Rises

When/Where: 9:20 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Dependable Drive-In, 500 Moon-Clinton Road, Moon. Various times at Cinemark in Robinson

Why Go: , Gotham City finally hits the big screen. Look for hints of the Steel City as Batman contends with newcomers Catwoman and the brutal and villainous Bane.
