Labor Day: What’s Open and What’s Closed

Find out where to relax, celebrate, or maybe catch one last swimming day.

The unofficial end of summer is this weekend, with the  Holiday. 

These days, most people celebrate  by taking time off from work, doing a little relaxing or maybe catching one last day at the pool.

With that in mind, here’s the scoop on what's open and closed:

  • : Closed.
  • : Closed.
  • : Open. Recreational hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Pennsylvania state offices, wine and spirits stores and courts: Closed. That includes PennDOT drivers license centers, which are closed through Monday.
  • Federal and state officesClosed, of course. That includes state liquor stores, courthouses, Pennsylvania drivers' license and photo centers.

A Piece of History

The first observance of  is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary, organized the event.

By 1893, more than half the states were observing  on one day or another. Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as .
