Weekend Planner: Get Out this Memorial Day

Check out these events to observe this Memorial Day weekend.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

When/Where: 6 p.m. Friday, May 24 at . 

Why Go:  Come watch as old flags that are no longer serviceable are properly retired. Patriotic music starts at 7 p.m. and fireworks cap the evening at 9 p.m. or when it's dark.

Memorial Service at the U.S. Coast Guard Dock

When/Where: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at . 

Why Go: This Memorial Day ceremony includes a ride on the water with the Coast Guard. 

Admission: Free. 

 

Veterans Memorial Service at SUMC

When/Where: 11 a.m. Sunday, May 26 at Sewickley United Methodist Church, Broad and Thorn streets, Sewickley.

Why Go: The Memorial Day service pays tribute to servicemen and women. Everyone is welcome. 

Admission: Free. 

 

122nd Annual Memorial Day Parade

Where/When: 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at the Sewickley Municipal Building, 601 Thorn St.

Why Go: Enjoy this long-standing Memorial Day tradition, which includes Parade Marshall Robert Lautanen, U.S. Army, WWII and more than 50 participating groups. 

Admission: Free. Streets on the parade route will close one hour before the parade. No parking is allowed from 6 a.m. to noon on parade day.

 

Program at Wolcott Park and Sewickley Cemetery

When/Where: After 10 a.m., Monday, May 27 at Wolcott Park and Sewickley Cemetery.

Why Go: Stop by Wolcott Park for a program that immediately follows the parade and includes the placing of a wreath and salute to the dead. A second program follows at the Sewickley Cemetery with keynote speaker Col Bryan O'Neill of Sewickley. 

Admission: Bus transportation from Wolcott Park to the cemetery is available.
