Propping: The Essence of the Interior Photo Shoot

Prop your home for a special event... or just because!

We take the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” pretty seriously in our esthetically oriented business, so there is almost nothing we value more than a good photographer (perhaps except for a good sale at Pottery Barn). Still, in all seriousness, a quality photo shoot serves as a way for us to promote our work, but also as a way to record and accent some pretty remarkable transformations.

Take this nearly 100-year-old farmhouse’s kitchen remodel for example.

The newly found crispness of the space, anchored in the contrast of the dark cabinetry against the bright white backsplash and surface, was a feature that needed to be front and center. We polished each piece of chrome, stainless steel, and white surface to ensure a great sparkle and shine.

Propping and styling are required design tactics for both a quality photo shoot and everyday visual purpose. We brought with us some Granny Smith apples and lemons as props that provide little pops of color and can remain on the countertop as decorations. We also moved around some vases of wildflowers for some additional dimension and visual interest.

When having a get-together at your home, think of it like setting up for a photo shoot. Utilize simple, but brightly colored accessories, like flowers or a bowl of fruit. Those items are the easiest and most effective way to create the interest needed to accentuate your space – under the correct light, of course. Play with lighting and allow for it to complement the colors you choose for your décor. Never be afraid to be a little creative!
