48 Hour Film Project

Starting seven years ago, a fast paced weekend in mid July has been designated for the writing, casting, shooting and editing of a movie in a short 2 day time period.  There were 52 films put in the proverbially can this past weekend, and they will be screened at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont with awards presented by a panel of judges on July 28th.

Each film team is given a prop, a character and a line of dialogue to be turned into a complete short film, varying from 4 to 7 minutes in length.  The one liner given this year was, “How did you figure it out?”  Did the teams turn the line into a murder mystery, a search for biological parents or a documentary on how to make a film in 48 hours?  Only the screening at the Hollywood will tell the answer.

More than 600 people participated in the 48 hour film project in Pittsburgh this year.  The filmmakers and crew ranged in age from teenagers to 80 years old.  The digital recorders ranged from video cameras to smart phones and most of the editing was done on personal computers. The world’s oldest filmmaking competition now boasts participants across 90 cities that make 3,000 films in the short 48 hours period.
