Participants will be "Freezin' for a Reason" to support the Zelienople-Harmony Park on New Year's Day.

If you thought you’d never see a polar bear in the north suburbs – or outside of the Pittsburgh Zoo – think again.

On New Year’s Day, the Friends of the Zelienople-Harmony Park will hold its first annual Polar Bear Plunge. Called “Freezin’ for a Reason,” the plunge benefits .

The event will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday with a warm-up at the Historic Harmony Inn in Harmony. Registration will be at 11 a.m., and the plunge will be at noon at the canoe launch at the end of Jackson Street in Harmony.

Alicia Flood, the treasurer/secretary for Friends of the Park, said more than 100 people already are signed up to take the plunge. The cost is $20 plus any donations from family, friends and businesses. Those taking a dip in the Connoquenessing Creek will receive a “Freezin’ for a Reason” T-shirt and a goodie bag.

There will be “Chicken” sponsorship sheets for those who’d prefer to stay warm and dry but still support the cause.

Plungers, friends of plungers and chickens alike are invited to head over to the Harmony Inn after the event to enjoy drink specials and watch as the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns.

To register for the plunge or for more information, call Chris Barnes at The Harmony Inn at 725-452-5124 or Dave Strawbridge at Fox's Pizza at 724-452-0511.
