'Hidden Treasures' Can Be Found at Sewickley Heights Treasure Sale

Fern Hollow Nature Center's fundraiser sale is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, with donations accepted until 5 p.m. today.

One man’s trash can be another man’s treasure, but in the case of Saturday’s Treasure Sale at the , shoppers will find more jewels than junk.

Sam Capezzuto, director of the nature center, said this is the second year they’re having the fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale will go toward educational programs at the center. The center’s largest fundraiser is the annual Fall Music Festival, and the 10th annual event will be Sept. 17, but the treasure sale definitely helps.

“We did it last year, and it was a phenomenal fundraiser for us,” Capezzuto said. “It exceeded our expectations by four times.”

Capezzuto said the donated items began rolling in after July 4 and over the weeks, the center accumulated a large amount of items to sell.

“Having storage really helped us this year,” she said.

Volunteers recently spent time organizing long tables laden with items into various categories, everything from china and jewelry to household goods, purses and toys.

Capezzuto said about 30 volunteers have pitched in to make the treasure sale a success.

On Wednesday, volunteers helped haul and sort through goods. On Thursday, they set up the big tent outside where many of the items will be placed for shoppers. Items such as jewelry and paintings will be housed inside the center.

While sorting through items with her daughter Chloe, volunteer Cindy Shearer found two designer bags she just had to have -- a black Ferragari purse and a pink Longchamp tote.

“I found treasure, and so will they when they get here,” Shearer said.  There are hidden treasures to be found.”
