Relay for Life Kicks Off Today at Quaker Valley High School

There are 100 registered participants this year.

"You Have Cancer!  41.24 % of men and women born today will hear those words some time during their lifetime." 

Quaker Valley’s eighth annual event kicks off noon today at the high school stadium track. 

The public is invited to come out, and take part in while having fun.

Barbara Cooley-Thaw, event chairwoman, said the free family event will have live music, crafts for the kids, silly contests and fireworks. The 24-hour walk also includes a survivor ceremony, a fight back ceremony, luminaria ceremony and a closing ceremony.

Relay For Life is a worldwide fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. People camp out to celebrate those who have battled cancer while raising money to fight the disease.

Teams made up of your neighbors and co-workers take turns walking around a track during the entire event. Teams try to have at least one member on the track during the overnight event. 

At 5 p.m. for the fifth consecutive year, the Quaker Valley Midget Football Association (QVMFA) cheerleaders will line the track and cheer on the survivors at Relay for Life. A from 1:30 to 3 p.m. is also planned courtesy of Chris Karwoski, ORVFC coaching director.

There are 100 participants and  participating this year, according to QVRelay.org.

“We will remember and honor those that have been afflicted and cheer on the survivors,” Cooley-Thaw said. “Together we can and do make a difference.”
