St. Matthews Celebrates 155 Years of 'Working in God's Vineyard'

The community joins Saturday in helping to mark the anniversary. The celebration continues today.

A crowd filled the reception hall Saturday night helping to mark 155th anniversary.

Sewickley Mayor Brian Jeffe presented the oldest African-American church in the with a proclamation from the borough, recognizing the church's longstanding presence in the community.

Citations were also sent from Gov. Tom Corbett, U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, and state , none of whom were in attendance.

The anniversary celebration also included numerous displays of photographs, newspaper articles, programs and other historical artifacts from the church's archives, as well as food and praise songs throughout the evening. 

The reception took place at the  at Thorn and Broad streets.

The two-day celebration,  continues today with an 11 a.m. service at St. Matthews. Pastor and presiding Elder, the Rev. Robert S. Hickey, Sr. will deliver the morning message. 

A closing service will follow at 3 p.m. with special guest and Presiding Elder, the Rev. Glenn Grayson from Wesley Center A.M.E. Zion Church in Pittsburgh. Grayson will be joined by his choir and congregation.
