5 Things to Know this Week: Clothesline Sale, Banned Books, Sewickley Series

1. Sewickley Series: The Social Media Reality

 For parents, their children’s use of social media as an everyday occurrence can feel overwhelming. At 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 Jesse Miller, a recognized speaker in Canada and the U.S. on the topics of social media and Internet safety, will stop by Sewickley Academy to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the new social media reality. 2. Clothesline Sale

Stop by Sewickley Academy for the annual Clothesline Sale and shop for quality men's, women's, and children's clothing; designer and vintage clothing; fashion accessories; sports equipment; shoes; books; dvds, cds, and VHS. All at bargain prices. Also accepting all major credit cards. Hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 20; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22. Sunday is also half price day; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23. Monday is $25 bag sale. 
 

3. Banned Books Week

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, teens can join the Sewickley Public Library for an after hours celebration in honor - or horror - of "Banned Books Week 2013."  Act out a role in the Banned Books Readers' Theater; Save challenged books in the Banned Books Scavenger Hunt; Make a Banned Books Week keychain or necklace; Get caught reading banned books in the photobooth.  And, enjoy music, dancing, video games, food and more.  Grades 6-12, only.  No registration required.

4. German Food Festival

The congregation of St. John's Lutheran Church will host a German Food Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. The church will serve authentic homemade German food and desserts in the church dining room.  A German bakery, featuring peach küchen, fall sweet breads, and homemade white bread will also be available. Tours of the historic church building will also be conducted. 

 

5. The Chaplin Project

Join Sweetwater Center for the Arts from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 as Pittsburgh pianist, arranger and composer Tom Roberts performs two new scores for the Charlie Chaplin masterpieces: One A.M. and The Rink.  For his scores, Roberts uses musical styles and genres that would have been appropriate for 1916.  In addition to ragtime, foxtrots, tangos and waltzes, he uses more exotic elements such as the French “Vals Musette” and Brazilian “Choros,” both styles that would have perhaps been performed with these scores in their respective countries. Tickets are: $10 advance/$12 day of event for members and tNon-members: $15 advance/$18 day of event for non-members.
