5 Things to Know This Week: Oktoberfest, Savoring Sewickley, Day of Giving

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. Day of Giving 

The Pittsburgh Foundation's Day of Giving is Thursday, Oct. 3. Any donation of $25 or more given that day at www.pittsburghgives.org can be delineated to the non-profit of your choice to receive a partial match.

2. Sewickley Oktoberfest

The second annual Sewickley Oktoberfest is Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5. Live entertainment includes the Autobahn Band, The Barons, Mädel Jäger (formerly Gaudi Buam), and the Grammy-nominated polka sensations Johnny Koenig & Band. Tickets are $10. 

3. St. James Oktoberfest

St. James Catholic Parish in Sewickley along with the Knights of Columbus will celebrate Oktoberfest from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. The menu includes German Potato Salad, Hot Dogs, Pork and Beans, Applesauce, German Chocolate Cake, Macaroni and Cheese, Sauerkraut and Kielbasa. 

Cost is $10 for adults, children to eighth grade $3, youth eighth grade to 12th grade $5. Drinks included. There will be music and entertainment including children's games and tractor rides. The parish is located at 200 Broad St. 

4. Mavuno Workshop

Sweetwater's popular "Mavuno" program brings a free two-day family workshop, the first on Friday, Oct. 4 and Friday, Oct. 10 during the MAVUNO Artist in Residence Program. Children of all ages are welcome to attend this specialized workshop, which allows participants to work closely with Leslie Ansley and select students as they explore the history of the Hill District and create a community of their own. Family groups will use paint and other art materials to create a one-of-a-kind “mini mural” based on historic Hill District photographs. To register, call Sweetwater at 412-741-4405.

5. Savoring Sewickley

Join the Friends of the Sewickley Public Library on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a casual evening featuring signature dishes presented as small plates by local restaurants. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased here. Tickets at the door are $65. 

Participating restaurants include 424 Walnut, Allegheny Country Club, Asian Star Chinese Restaurant, China Palace, East Coast Sandwiches, Half Nych Hot Dogs, Lula, Safran’s Supermarket, Sewickley Cafe, Sewickley Confectionery, Sewickley Heights Golf Club, Sewickley Hotel, Sewickley Speakeasy, Sharp Edge Bistro, Sincerely Yogurt, Tony R’s Pizza and the Ultimate Pastry Shop.
