5 Things to Know This Week: Portraits, Montessori Open House and Italian Garden Dinner

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. Metaphysical Portraits

Sweetwater Center for the Arts presents an exhibition showcasing the works of visionary artist, Michael Fratangelo. The artist says very term ‘metaphysical’ suggests looking beyond the physical, visible reality to something either spiritual or mystical...," according to the artist. The exhibit runs today, Aug. 19 to Friday, Aug. 30.

2. Picture This: An Intro to Digital Photography

This course at the Sewickley Public Library will teach the advantages of digital photography and the equipment and features to know about when buying a digital camera. Get a brief intro to software and websites for organizing, editing and sharing digital photos. Bring your camera if you have one, along with the camera manual.  Runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

3. Italian Garden Dinner

Join Fern Hollow Nature Center for an Italian Garden dinner that celebrates the traditional family vegetable garden. The dinner will feature fresh fruit, vegetables, pasta and meats from the St. James Farmers Market. Set on Fern Hollow's lawn, guests will enjoy a fresh, simply prepared meal, samples of Italian wine and entertainment. Guests are also invited to stroll the grounds and the nature center's own “Italian garden” set in the community garden. Tickets required. 

4. Experience the Interflow

Sweetwater Center for the Arts presents a live improvisational multimedia performance from 8 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. The three conduit artists merge by entrainment to illustrate the vision and motion of sound, while remaining open to the spontaneous expression of creativity in each moment. Music and artwork will be available for purchase. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

5. Montessori Children's Community Open House 

Montessori Children's Community will host an open house at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25. Tour newly renovated classrooms, meet dedicated faculty and see first hand why a Montessori Education could be the best possible educational experience for your child in preschool through eighth grade.
